40 questions- Section 1Everyday conversation10 questions
Two people sorting out daily business: a booking, a sign-up, a service enquiry. Many answers are numbers and names.
- Section 2Everyday monologue10 questions
One speaker: a tour guide, an announcement, a walk-through of a facility.
- Section 3Academic discussion10 questions
Up to four speakers working through an assignment or a research project. This is where most marks are lost.
- Section 4Academic lecture10 questions
A lecturer speaking straight through on a specialist topic, with nobody interrupting.
Reading · 40 questions
40 questions- Passage 1Passage 113 questions
The easiest of the three. Usually descriptive, with many questions answered directly in the text.

A step harder, and where matching headings to paragraphs and matching information start to appear.
- Passage 3Passage 314 questions
The longest academic passage, heavy on argument. Includes Yes/No/Not Given on the writer's own views.

British, Australian, New Zealand and North American mixed the way the real test mixes them. Practise only on British and then meet an Australian speaker in Section 3 and you lose marks you had earned — that is the fault of the practice material, not the learner.

A weakness profile by question type
